A Jackson homeowner shot and killed an apparent burglar early today as the man broke out his bedroom window, Jackson police say.
Sinartha Bradfield, 31, of 1807 Linda Lane in northwest Jackson was awakened at about 12:05 a.m. by the sound of glass breaking in his bedroom window, said Jackson police spokesman Robert Graham. Bradfield spotted a man trying to come through the window and shot the intruder with a shotgun, striking him in the chest, Graham said.
The man, Anthony Mayers, 31, of Jennings Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police at mid-morning were gathering evidence at the Linda Lane address. The home's windows are covered with burglar bars, but the bars had been removed from the bedroom window.
"This is a quiet neighborhood, and things like this usually don't go on here," said Jackson police Sgt. Det. Joseph Wade. "But with this kind of activity, this kind of thing is bound to happen."
Bradfield was not at his home as police continued their investgation. Bradfield was questioned by detectives following the shooting and was not charged, Graham said.
The case will be presented to a Hinds County grand jury, which will decide whether Bradfield will face charges, Graham said.
